Collection: Blackwater Nano fish and other Nano fish

Blackwater nano fish are small species adapted to the soft, acidic, tannin-rich waters of tropical forest streams and peat swamps in regions like Southeast Asia and the Amazon Basin. These environments are stained deep amber or tea-brown from decaying leaves, seed pods, and driftwood, which release humic and fulvic acids into the water. The chemistry of these habitats is characterized by extremely low mineral content, with conductivity often below 50 µS/cm, pH values ranging from 4.0 to 6.5, and almost no measurable hardness. Oxygen levels can be low due to slow water movement and organic matter decomposition, so most blackwater species have evolved to tolerate or even prefer these conditions. Nano fish such as chili rasboras (Boraras brigittae), ember tetras (Hyphessobrycon amandae), and green neon tetras (Paracheirodon simulans) display their most vivid colors and natural schooling behavior in aquariums that replicate these conditions — using botanicals, catappa leaves, and subdued lighting. When maintained in stable, soft, acidic water with gentle flow, they thrive and reveal the quiet, understated beauty of true blackwater environments.

Other non-blackwater fish are also present, and many of them can be kept in a similar blackwater aquarium. Make sure to read our description carefully and do your own research!
