Epiplatys annulatus "Clown Killifish" or "Banded panchax"

Epiplatys means to "float" while "annulus" means rings, referring to the black bands.

Epiplatys annulatus, commonly known as the Clown Killifish, is a small, colorful freshwater fish native to West Africa. Its striking appearance and relatively easy care requirements make it a popular choice for aquarium hobbyists.  They have tan-yellow body with black band and red strips downs he caudal fins.  Females have shorter and less colorful fins.

Epiplatys annulatus thrives in lowland swamps, sluggish streams, and small rivers within regions characterized by open savannahs and tropical rainforests. It is commonly found in areas with marginal vegetation or aquatic plants. While most habitats are freshwater, it can also tolerate slightly brackish conditions in certain locations. The climate in its range is consistently hot and humid, with a distinct wet season spanning April-May and October-November. Most rivers in this region flow year-round. The water is typically warm, soft, and acidic, though extensive deforestation of primary rainforest has impacted many habitats. Consequently, surviving populations often reside within protected forest reserves.

Tank size: A minimum of 10 gallons is recommended for a group of 6 or more.

Tank setup: A densely planted aquarium with plenty of hiding places is ideal.

Diet: Omnivorous, feeding on a variety of small live and flake foods.

Tankmates: Peaceful and compatible with other small, peaceful fish.

Epiplatys annulatus are egg-scatterers, meaning they don't build nests. They will typically lay their eggs on plants or in the substrate of their tank.  Use spawning mops, mosses or floating plants.
