Inpaichthys kerri, commonly known as the Blue Emperor Tetra, is a stunning and peaceful characin endemic to the upper Rio Aripuanã basin in Brazil. Closely related to Nematobrycon palmeri, this species exhibits an elongated body with a deep, metallic blue sheen that shimmers vividly under subdued lighting. Males display elongated tail filaments and stronger coloration, while females are rounder and paler. In well-maintained, planted aquaria, groups of these fish show coordinated, regal movement reminiscent of their namesake.

Size:
Adults reach approximately 4–5 cm (about 1.5–2.0″) in total length.

Water parameters:
Soft, slightly acidic to neutral water is ideal.
pH 5.5 – 7.5; GH ≤ 10 °d; KH ≤ 6 °d; TDS < 200 ppm.
Use dark substrate, driftwood, and dense vegetation to mimic their natural blackwater environment. Gentle filtration and clean, stable water conditions are key to maintaining coloration and vitality.

Temperature:
24 – 28 °C (75 – 82 °F); maintain steady warmth and avoid abrupt fluctuations.

Food:
Omnivorous and adaptable. Accepts quality flakes, micro-pellets, and frozen or live foods such as daphnia, bloodworms, and brine shrimp. Occasional live feedings help maintain rich blue tones and encourage breeding.

Important note:
This species is tank-bred, hardy, and peaceful. Keep in schools of at least 6–8 individuals for natural behavior and optimal color expression. Avoid bright overhead light or excessive flow, as both can cause stress. Proper care and stable conditions allow these fish to live for 4–6 years or more.

Tankmates:
Perfectly suited to community aquaria with small, gentle companions such as tetras, rasboras, pencilfish, dwarf corydoras, and apistogrammas. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species.
