Splendens Complex

The splendens complex is an informal group of six closely related Betta species from mainland Southeast Asia, defined by shared morphology (short head, iridescent opercular scaling, short-finned wild form) and by bubble nest spawning, the trait that separates them from the mouthbrooding Betta groups. All are small fish of still, vegetated, often low oxygen water: paddies, marshes, ditches, and swamps. Males build and guard a floating bubble nest and tend the eggs and fry. Because the species are closely related and their ranges overlap in places, they interbreed readily, both in the wild and, far more often, on farms.

  • Betta splendens (Siamese fighting fish). The type species, native to central Thailand and the largest of the complex at 6 to 7 cm SL. Wild fish are short finned and drab brown green until they display. The long fins, fixed color, and heightened aggression of ornamental strains are the result of centuries of selective breeding. Listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN, threatened by habitat loss and by interbreeding with released ornamental fish.
  • Betta imbellis (crescent betta). Widespread through peninsular Thailand, Malaysia, northern Sumatra, and Vietnam. Dark body with iridescent blue fins and opercles, and a red crescent shaped band on the edge of the caudal fin.
  • Betta smaragdina (emerald betta). Northeastern Thailand and Laos. Light brown body with green iridescent opercular scales and a transversely barred caudal fin, without the red crescent.
  • Betta siamorientalis. Widespread across eastern Thailand, Cambodia, and southern Vietnam. A small species (about 4 cm SL) with a dark body, green blue iridescence, and red ventral fins tipped in white. Described in 2012.
  • Betta mahachaiensis (Mahachai betta). Restricted to coastal central Thailand, and the only member adapted to brackish water at roughly 1 to 10 ppt, living in tidal nipa palm swamps where males nest in the palm bracts. Brown black body, green to blue green iridescence, and two vertical bars on the opercle. Described in 2012 and severely threatened by urban expansion.
  • Betta stiktos. The smallest and least known member (about 3 cm SL), from the Mekong basin in Cambodia. Described in 2005, long absent from collections and once feared extinct, now many breeders are making this species more readily available.
