Quality Betta Smaragdina bred from a breeder in Vietnam. These fish originate from the Buriram in Thailand which is a harsher environment than other splendens, as such these fish are very hardy and great for beginners since they can tolerate low temperatures.
Smaragdina from the province of Buriram are known for their extra thick iridescence.
Physical Characteristics
- Body: Slender and elongated compared to the more common domestic Betta splendens. They are one of the larger splenden species.
- Coloration: Males exhibit a striking unique structure of the scales causesing the fish to shimmer with green and blue hues, creating a mesmerizing visual effect
- Fins: Fins are typically brown to black with iridescent green-blue interradial membranes. The caudal fin typically has transverse bars and lacks the red, crescent-shaped distal band found in some other Betta species. The fins of smaragdina are often very long when compare to their splendens cousins.
- Opercular membrane: Opercular coloration is typical of smaragdina type which is "snake-like" scales pattern
- Habitat: Inhabits slow-moving streams, marshes, and rice paddies with dense vegetation. Prefers soft, slightly acidic water conditions.
