Wild-caught Betta Persephone from Johor, Malaysia
The Betta persephone, also known as the Black Paradise Betta or the Batman Betta, is a small labyrinth fish native to Southeast Asia. It is found in peat swamp forests and blackwater streams in Malaysia and Indonesia. Sadly, due to habitat loss, this beautiful fish is now listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
They are a dwarf species, only reaching a maximum length of about 2.6 centimeters (1 inch) standard length (SL). Males are a striking blue-black, while females are typically brown with reddish tones. The males also have a pointed dorsal fin, whereas the females' fins are more rounded. Like all Bettas, they have a labyrinth organ that allows them to breathe air from the surface.
Due to their specific habitat requirements and territorial behavior, Betta persephone are considered moderately difficult to keep in aquariums. However, for experienced hobbyists who can provide the proper environment, they can be a rewarding addition to a species tank.
Interesting fact: The Betta Persephone is named after the Greek goddess Persephone, queen of the underworld, likely due to their dark coloration and preference for blackwater environments.
