Pseudomugil luminatus (“Red Neon Blue-Eye” Rainbowfish)

Pseudomugil luminatus, commonly known as the Red Neon Blue-Eye Rainbowfish, is a small, dazzling freshwater species native to a limited region near Timika, Papua, Indonesia. Males display vibrant red to orange body tones, electric blue eyes, and elongated fins, while females are slightly smaller and paler but still colorful. Their constant movement and iridescent flashes make them a spectacular highlight in planted or nano aquariums.

Size:
Adults reach approximately 2.5–3.8 cm (≈ 1.0–1.5″) in length.

Water parameters:
Soft to moderately soft, slightly acidic to neutral water is preferred.
pH 6.0 – 7.5
GH ≤ 8 °d
KH ≤ 4 °d
TDS < 200 ppm
Provide clean, stable water with gentle flow, abundant plants, floating vegetation, and subdued lighting to replicate their natural blackwater habitats.

Temperature:
22 – 26 °C (72 – 79 °F); maintain stable warmth for consistent coloration and activity.

Food:
Micropredator/omnivore — feeds on small invertebrates and plankton in the wild.
In captivity, offer fine flakes, micro-pellets, and frequent live or frozen foods such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia, and microworms to bring out vivid coloration.

Tankmates:
Peaceful, social fish best kept in groups of at least 6–8 individuals.
Excellent companions include small rasboras, ricefish, dwarf corydoras, and other gentle rainbowfish.
Avoid large or aggressive tankmates that may outcompete them for food.

Breeding:
An egg-scattering species. For breeding, use a separate tank with soft, slightly acidic water, fine-leaved plants, or spawning mops.
Condition adults with live foods. Spawning occurs daily, with eggs adhering to fine surfaces.
Eggs hatch in 7–10 days depending on temperature.
Feed fry infusoria or green water at first, then baby brine shrimp or microworms as they grow.

Important note:
This species is tank-bred, hardy, and adaptable once established.
They are active midwater swimmers that need both open space and cover.
Ensure excellent water quality and stable conditions to maintain vibrant coloration and breeding behavior.
