Paracheirodon Simulans (Green Neon Tetra)
Paracheirodon Simulans (Green Neon Tetra)
Conservation Status
- Currently listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, but habitat loss and overcollection for the aquarium trade pose potential threats.
Description
The Paracheirodon simulans, commonly known as the Green Neon Tetra, is a captivating small freshwater fish that hails from the Amazon basin in South America. It's a close relative of the more popular Neon Tetra but boasts its own unique charm.
- Size: Typically reaches about an inch (2.5 cm) in length.
- Appearance: Distinguished by its iridescent blue-green stripe running along its body, which can change hue depending on lighting and mood. Unlike its neon cousin, it lacks the vibrant red stripe.
- Behavior: Peaceful and shoaling fish, preferring to live in groups of six or more. They are active swimmers and enjoy exploring their tank.
Care
Green Neon Tetras are relatively easy to care for, but they do have specific requirements to thrive:
Tank Setup
- Tank size: A minimum of 10 gallons is suitable for a small school.
-
Water parameters:
- Temperature: 72-82°F (22-28°C)
- pH: 5.0-7.0 (slightly acidic to neutral)
- Hardness: 1-5 dGH (soft water)
- Substrate: Fine gravel or sand is preferred.
- Decorations: Live plants, driftwood, and rocks can create a natural environment and provide hiding spots.
- Lighting: Dim lighting can enhance their colors and reduce stress.
Tankmates
Peaceful, small fish like other tetras, rasboras, and small catfish are suitable tankmates. Avoid aggressive or larger fish that may harass or prey on them.
