IUCN Red List: Least Concern
These fish are caught from the province of Hau Giang
Wild caught Betta Imbellis from Vietnam. Imbellis are known for their red trimming on the caudal, anal and ventral fins. They also have dual bars iridescence on its cheek plates. They are very similar and closely related to betta siamorientalis. Like all wild fish, they have "green" metallic coloration with blue iridescence.
They are not line-bred or contain any hybridization like most Imbellis you have seen from farms. They might contain some hybridnization from the release of figther type splendens historically.
-
Body Shape: Slender and elongated, characteristic of wild Betta species in the Betta splendens complex, reaching a maximum standard length of approximately 2.4 inches (6 cm). The body is slightly compressed, giving it a streamlined appearance suited for navigating dense vegetation.
-
Tail Shape: Caudal fin is rounded or crescent-shaped, often displaying a distinctive red, crescent-like distal band, which inspires the common name "Crescent Betta." Fins are shorter and less ornate than those of Betta splendens, with a functional design for agility in natural habitats.
-
Coloration: Base color is dark brown to black, overlaid with iridescent blue or green scales that shimmer under light. Males exhibit vivid red accents on the caudal, ventral, and anal fins, with more intense coloration during courtship or aggression. Females are less vibrant, typically brownish with muted red or blue tints and faint iridescence.
-
Operculum: Males feature striking iridescent blue or green scales on the gill covers, often with two vertical blue-green bars (occasionally red in some populations), contrasting sharply against the darker body. Females have subdued opercular markings with minimal iridescence.
-
Habitat: Native to slow-moving, shallow waters of Southeast Asia, including southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, and northern Sumatra, with introduced populations in Singapore. Inhabits rice paddies, swamps, roadside ditches, and ponds with dense aquatic vegetation and leaf litter. Thrives in warm, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 4-7), often with low dissolved oxygen, relying on its labyrinth organ for breathing.
