Desmopuntius rhomboocellatus (“Snakeskin Barb”)

Desmopuntius rhomboocellatus, commonly known as the Snakeskin Barb, is a striking mid-sized barb species native to the peat swamps and blackwater forest streams of southern and central Kalimantan, Borneo. Its name comes from the distinctive chain-like, reticulated pattern of dark-edged scales running along a golden-orange body — an elegant design that evokes snakeskin. Males display deeper red hues, particularly in the fins, while females remain paler with a rounder shape. Active yet peaceful, this species adds color and lively schooling motion to Southeast Asian blackwater aquariums.

Size:
Typically reaches 6–7 cm (≈ 2.5–2.75″) in total length.

Water parameters:
Prefers soft, acidic blackwater with low mineral content.
pH 5.0 – 7.0; GH ≤ 8 °d; KH ≤ 4 °d; TDS < 150 ppm.
Use leaf litter, peat, and driftwood to recreate its natural tannin-stained habitat. Gentle flow and dark substrate enhance coloration and behavior.

Temperature:
24 – 28 °C (75 – 82 °F). Maintain stable warmth and good oxygenation; avoid stagnant or overly bright conditions.

Food:
Omnivorous and adaptable. Accepts quality flakes, micro-pellets, and frozen or live foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworms. Regular feedings of live foods enhance color and breeding readiness.

Important note:
Peaceful and hardy once acclimated, though they prefer to be in small groups of at least 6 or more to feel secure. Their dynamic schooling behavior and rich body pattern show best against dark backgrounds under subdued lighting.

Tankmates:
Ideal for community aquaria with other gentle blackwater species such as rasboras, small gouramis, loaches, and dwarf corydoras. Avoid aggressive or overly boisterous fish that may disrupt their calm nature.
