Noted difference from our supplier is that this fish is slightly larger than the type collected in Malinau.
A great beginner fish for someone being introduced to the mouthbrooding betta world. They have more of a maroon or burgundy colored body with black and white seams on their fins. Depending on locality, some may have a more orange body. Their best colors come out when they are the ready to breed.

Betta albimarginata from Sebuku belongs to the Betta albimarginata complex and is a rare mouthbrooding betta native to the forest streams of East Kalimantan, Borneo. This locality form grows slightly larger than the Malinau population and displays a maroon to burgundy body coloration accented by distinct black and white fin seams. Depending on origin, individuals may show a more orange tone. Males develop their most vibrant colors when in breeding condition, displaying striking contrast and graceful fin extension. This is an excellent introduction to mouthbrooding bettas for aquarists interested in more specialized species.
Size:
Reaches up to 5 cm (≈ 2″) in total length.
Water parameters:
Prefers soft, clean, tannin-rich water with minimal current.
pH 6.0 – 7.0; TDS 60 – 100 ppm.
Though tolerant of higher TDS, they thrive best in softer water conditions. Provide leaf litter, botanicals, and shaded areas to mimic their natural blackwater habitat.
Temperature:
24 – 29 °C (75 – 85 °F). Cooler water promotes longevity, while slightly warmer conditions encourage coloration and spawning behavior.
Food:
Carnivorous. Currently feeding on live foods such as blackworms, and readily accepts frozen bloodworms and quality pellets once acclimated. Offer a varied, high-protein diet to maintain health and color.
Important note:
Wild populations are classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List due to rapid habitat destruction from palm oil plantation development. Provide stable, pristine water conditions and subdued lighting to minimize stress.
Tankmates:
Best kept as pairs or small groups in spacious, heavily structured aquaria. Somewhat territorial, but can coexist peacefully if visual barriers and hiding spots are available. Recommend one pair per 5 gallons. Avoid aggressive or fast-moving species.
