Wild caught Betta Albimarginata collected from Malinau

From the Betta Albimarginata Complex.

A great beginner fish for someone being introduced to the mouthbrooding betta world. The Malinau locality typically displays a deep maroon to red body with bold black fins sharply edged in white. Their contrast is especially clean and defined compared to other localities. Males show their best coloration when ready to breed, intensifying in both depth and brightness while extending their fins in display.

Due to habitat destruction and the construction of palm oil plantations, these are:

IUCN Red List: Endangered (Very high risk of extinction in the wild)

Betta albimarginata from Malinau belongs to the Betta albimarginata complex and is a rare mouthbrooding betta native to the forest streams of East Kalimantan, Borneo. This population is considered the classic form of the species and remains highly popular for its crisp white fin margins and rich red coloration. Like other members of the complex, males are paternal mouthbrooders, carrying eggs and fry in their mouths until free swimming. This species thrives in shaded, tannin-stained forest waters and makes an excellent introduction to more specialized Betta species.

Size:
Reaches up to 4–5 cm (≈ 1.5–2″) in total length.

Water parameters:
Prefers soft, clean, tannin-rich water with minimal current.
pH 6.0 – 7.0; TDS 60 – 100 ppm.
Though tolerant of slightly higher TDS, they perform best in softer water. Provide leaf litter, botanicals, and shaded areas to mimic their natural blackwater habitat.

Temperature:
24 – 29 °C (75 – 85 °F). Cooler water promotes longevity, while slightly warmer conditions encourage coloration and spawning behavior.

Food:
Carnivorous. Currently feeding on live foods such as blackworms, and readily accepts frozen bloodworms and quality pellets once acclimated. Offer a varied, high-protein diet to maintain health and color.

Important note:
Wild populations are classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List due to rapid habitat destruction from palm oil plantation development. Provide stable, pristine water conditions and subdued lighting to minimize stress.

Tankmates:
Best kept as pairs or small groups in spacious, heavily structured aquaria. Somewhat territorial, but can coexist peacefully if visual barriers and hiding spots are available. Recommend one pair per 5 gallons. Avoid aggressive or fast-moving species.
